Our History

The Emery Project is a component of Hawkins House Inc its primary purpose is to establish concrete resources to aid in the community’s well-being through tangible and ongoing programs for community health. In 2015 a local TV station ran a story of a young teen male walking on I-35; when stopped by local police and questioned on where he was going, he stated that he had hitch-hiked from California looking for work and a place to live. The teen had no viable skills and had just aged out of foster care. This touched my heart, and I felt empathy for this young man. I wanted to do something tangible that could be a lasting legacy to this young man. I have always been blessed to have a strong family that believes in God, and my mother and father (to which this non-profit is dedicated) taught us that if your hands find something to do: don’t wait for someone else to do it; get it done. So my husband and I decided to create an advocacy platform for children and families involved with Oklahoma’s child protective service department. After involvement with this advocacy group, we believed that there has to be a preventative element added to the equation, so we started the Emery project to create substantial resources for the communities in Oklahoma to help fight neglect which is the primary reason that children end up in the Child Welfare System.
